Disappointment For Öncü In Race One

Kawasaki Puccetti Racing rider Can Öncü was in a solid fourth place at the beginning of the first FIM Supersport World Championship race at Misano but he was to fall on lap two and no-score

Having qualified sixth in Superpole on Friday, and sporting an all-black special ELF livery, Can was leading the group chasing the breakaway top three when he fell at the left handed Quercia corner.

He could not get back into contention because of damage to his machine and retired from the race.

The 18-lap race itself was held on dry but hot conditions, with Can one of eight riders who would not finish the race due to falls or technical issues.

Now Can has one more opportunity at Misano to take the kind of top result he hope for at his team’s home round, with Race Two Scheduled for a 15.15 start on Sunday 16 June.

Can Öncü, stated: “Unfortunately, my race only lasted a couple of laps. I started strongly and I was in the leading group when I saw that the front-runners were getting away, so I tried to stick with them. I picked up the pace but unfortunately crashed, putting an end to my race. I’m sorry I lost this opportunity, but luckily we have another race tomorrow and I’ll try to make up for it - also to give my team a good result in return for all their hard work.”

New rider in the Vince 64 Kawasaki team, Simon Jespersen, qualified in 28th place but raced to 20th place in the Misano opener. Swiss rider Marcel Brenner (Viamo Racing Kawasaki) was 25th.

Local rider Gabriele Giannini (Prodina Kawasaki) crashed out of the race just before Öncü.
